P J Powers
P.J. Powers has recorded 15 albums (new album ‘Women of Africa’) -7 with the supergroup Hotline with whom she was lead vocalist for 8 years, and 9 solo albums, achieving awards for double platinum, 4 double gold’s and 3 gold’s. Indeed P.J. has had a career to remember!‘Thandeka’ (the loved one), as she is affectionately known, must surely be one of very few artists who has performed for numerous heads of state and royalty, including Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth 11, King Carlos of Spain and Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, as well as having performed at president Nelson Mandela’s 75th birthday and at his inauguration as president in Pretoria. In July 1994 P.J. Powers flew to London to record the theme song for the rugby world cup 1995 – ‘World in union’, with Grammy award winners Ladysmith Black Mambazo. She performed this song at Newlands rugby stadium at the glittering opening ceremony of the 1995 rugby world cup and this was screened live to millions around the world. This was the absolute highlight of P.J.’s career, and an inspiration to her especially when the ‘Ama bokke’ won the series and Madiba wore his Springbok jersey in front of the whole world. She continues to involve herself closely with various charities and worthy causes, including the likes of Operation hunger, Ithuba, Red nose day, Wild life, Drive alive, as well as Child survival, the development foundation in Harare and Education Africa.
