Derek is one of the large band of former Zimbabweans now broadcasting in this country. A late starter in journalism, he swapped his pin-striped suit and a career in computer systems marketing in the city of London for the rather Spartan life of a cadet reporter with the (then) Rhodesian Herald.
Mixing reporting with large doses of soldiering in the bush war, he emerged four years later as the groups specialist rugby writer and a company commander with 1st Battalion Rhodesia Regiment.
In 1978 Derek joined the SABC’s television news team as a sub editor in Johannesburg. During that time he wrote most of the lead stories for the bulletin and acted as News Editor.
