The leader Kolwani studied at the Royal Northern College of music in the UK with Dorothy de Lay from Julliard School of Music in USA, Professor Walter Mony from Wits University in S.A, Professor Alan Solomon and Joe Sack. Kolwani was the founder member of the Soweto string Quartet.

Apart from its many regular South African appearances the Buskaid Soweto String Ensemble has performed in London, Paris, New York, Los Angeles, Holland, Ireland and New Zealand, and as a guest artist at the City of London and Cheltenham International Festivals and the New Haven International Festival of Arts and Ideas.

The Ensemble has played under the baton of Sir John Eliot Gardiner, and with such distinguished artists as Bernarda Fink and Steven Isserlis. The proceeds from CD sales of the Ensemble revert to the Charitable Trust.

They have also done the backing for the `Idols’ competition broadcast live from Gold Reef City.

Motswako String Quartet Johannesburg
Motswako’s strength is in their variety of repertoire. They play a wide selection of classical music, African folk, contemporary popular music as well as original material. The quartet has played at numerous high-profile corporate and government functions and was invited by the South African Embassy to the People’s Republic of China to play in Beijing in August 2002. They also played in the UK and Zambia in July 2003. In November 2003, they played at the opening of the new South African Embassy building in Berlin, Germany. They also played at the Kora All-Africa Awards ceremony in 2004.

Whether the Promenade Ensemble performs as a trio, a String Quartet or as a Dance Orchestra, it always turns the event into a special occasion. The mood and atmosphere created by the group goes unsurpassed.

The Promenade Ensemble has an extensive and versatile repertoire and has recently been enlarged.

Soweto String Quartet Johannesburg
At the end of February, the SSQ went to Namibia to play at the State Banquet for Presidents Sam Nujoma, Robert Mugabe and Gerry Rawlings and many other top diplomatic figures, for the re-intergration of Walvis Bay into Namibia.

The Soweto String Quartet are currently in great demand, performing on TV, radio, concerts, corporate and private functions as well as cultural festivals.

The countries they have performed at are Singapore, Hong Kong, Mozambique, Swaziland, Botswana, Spain, Germany, New Zealand and Australia.

They also did two performances in Windhoek with the Namibian National Symphony Orchestra. In July they worked at the Grahamstown Festival with South Africa’s famous string quartet, Odean Quartet as an 8 piece as well as playing their own African repertoire to a standing ovation.

Lyric Ensemble also has a 7piece Swing band with male and female vocalists for the middle range function.

For a smaller function, a string trio or trio with flute and strings, strings and sax, or harp, flute, and cello are very popular.
