African Jazz Pioneers Johannesburg
Just over fifty years ago the young Ntemi settled for the saxophone, after his cherished trombone got stolen. The saxophone soon became his trademark and he was one of the country’s best and most enduring saxophonists, fact for which he was honoured by Minister Ben Ngubane in August 2000, during a ceremony at Morelete park, Mamelodi. Bra Ntemi passed away on 18 December 2000.

The African Jazz Pioneers are honouring their promise to Bra Ntemi to keep the music going. The Ikageng Jazz Festival, established in 2001, has been named ‘The Night of the Pioneers’ and AJP closes each edition as top of the bill.
In the last two years, they performed a.o. for the Flemish Minister of Culture, the President of the European Parliament and President Thabo Mbeki.

In October 2002, African Jazz Pioneers recorded a CD/DVD with Jamaican jazz-legend & the ‘godfather of Ska’, Ernest Ranglin at Downtown Studio’s, Johannesburg.

May 2003 saw the Pioneers in an extra-ordinary co-operation with the RAU Song & Dance Company and Dolly Rathebe in ‘Sof’town – a Celebration’, which ran for 5 nights to a sold-out house.

During October 2004 the band toured Holland and Belgium where they were received to great acclaim by press and public alike.

African Jazz Pioneers’ latest cd entitled ’76, Third Avenue’, a mix of new compositions and old favourites, featuring luminaries as Phuzekhemisi, Lemmy Special, Thandiswa Mazwai, Tshepo Tshola and the late Dolly Rathebe was released by Gallo in November 2004.

Avzal Ismail in addition to working with top international names including acclaimed violinist Regina Carter, Donald Harrison, Carl Andersen, Professor James Houlik, Bhakhithi Khumalo and a host of other top names, he has also composed and performed the finale for the opening ceremony of the World Summit for Sustainable development that was held in Johannesburg. He also performed at the first inauguration banquet of President Thabo Mbeki.
Avzal is involved in many projects and works with top local artists on a continuous basis.

Carri-Anne Parker Johannesburg
She started singing at the age of 10 at Shopping Centres, Mardi Gras, Carnivals etc. Together with Iggie Louw, they formed a girl gropu called Milkshake which toured around the Country. She later formed a 5 piece band called Tidal Creed which did originals and covers and also performed for a formal launch in Johannesburg for all the Agents and Record Companies. Carri-Anne has performed at the Intercontinental Hotel Club in Dubai on a 3 month contract.

Gloria Bosman Johannesburg
numerous clubs throughout the country as the leading lady for such festivals as Arts
Alive (1995/1997), the Joy of Jazz Festival in Pretoria (1997/1998) , the 1998 Women’s Arts Festival in Durban Playhouse and the Grahamstown Festival. Jonas Gwangwa gave her the opportunity to tour overseas when she shared the stage with this jazz great on his tour of France and Noumea.

She had the honour of singing for both outgoing and incoming presidents when she sang for Thabo Mbeki at his Christmas Dinner and for Nelson Mandela at his 80th Birthday celebrations at Gallagher Estates, Midrand. To her credit Gloria has sung with myriad artists all of whom represents the African Jazz Renaissance of which she is a huge part. She has shared the stage with the likes of Sibongile Khumalo, Moses Molelekwa, Tananas, Sipho Mabuse, Vusi Mahlasela, James Phillips, Victor Masondo and Hugh Masekela to name only a few.

Jacques Lagesse Johannesburg
His repertoire consists mainly of laid-back Jazz standards and evergreen romantic ballads. A soothing unobtrusive ambience is guaranteed. Great for quiet background music and entertainment. His Mauritian blood brings a strong flair for Latin rhythms - Bossa Nova and Samba. He also performs a cabaret set featuring music from the Big Band Swing era, which is done to backing tracks. Jacques can performs with his trio (Keyboards / Bass / Saxophonist) and if required he adds a (drummer / percussionist).

James Frank & the Sticky Triggers Johannesburg/Pretoria
In April 2006 James Frank launched his new project, James Frank and the Sticky Triggers, with their first performance being at the prestigious Nederburg Auction and an array of subsequent corporate performances for, among others, Shoprite (Woman of the Year), First National Bank (2010 sponsorship launch) and Pam Golding Properties. In almost no time at all, they have managed to make a name for themselves as one of the most exciting new bands on the music scene, largely due to their ease and ability in mixing a host of different styles with a massive, flashy delivery.

His debut album Echoes from the Past was released in September 1997 receiving 2 FNB South African Music Awards for “Best Newcomer” and “Best Contemporary Jazz Album” in 1998. The album has since been released in nine territories on the Verve label including United States, Italy, Switzerland, Sweden and Hungary. With the release of Essence of Rhythm in March 2000 Jimmy received further acknowledgements from the South African music industry winning the “Best Male Artist” and “Best Contemporary Jazz Album” at the South African Music Awards. The single Point of view from the album went to top charts on top South African radio stations across the country.

She’s worked on the cruise liner ‘Princess Symphony’ with Jazz pianist, Gerry Spencer & participated in the Fin de Siecle Festival at Nantes, France as the lead vocalist of the band Taola. Also involved in radio voice-overs and jingles and cast for an educational programme for teenagers.

She performs at the UCT Vice Chancellor concerts under the direction of Mike Campbell & with the Band ‘Nice ‘n Easy’ at corporate functions

The group can be expanded into the 10-piece Latin Fire Band. Latin Fire specializes in Cuban and Brazilian music and performs only as a show band complete with dancers if required. This includes a 3-piece horn section as well as a percussionist.

Lynn Locketz Johannesburg
In 1999, Lyn received vocal training from Dina Kopenhager, Steven Lees and more recently with Idols coach Malie Kelly. She has since appeared in two musical revues ‘Lies of Broadway’ and ‘Face of Music’.

Together with Kevin, appeared in ‘Back to Broadway and Beyond’ a 1 month cabaret. They recently appeared in a ‘Programme of Jazz standards’. Both have performed in numerous charity performances together with Tobe Cronje and Brian Schimmel.

She has performed at Hilton Hotel in Sandton on a 2 month contract. Also at Carnival City Casino. Lynn performs broadway and contemporary ballads. Her favourites are jazz standards, music by Cole Porter, Sarah Vaugh, Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Dina Washington etc.

Natalie Rungan Durban
Also in 1998, Natalie took to the stage at the Standard Bank Jazz Festival By The Sea as a support act with Darius Brubeck, to industry icons Hugh Masekela and Sibongile Khumalo. Natalie has sung with Australian band Warkala in December 1999 and with Canadian composer-pianist Dr Carol Anne Weaver in April 2000.
Natalie completed her Bachelor of Music degree in 1999 and went on to reveal her great talent and promise as a composer and arranger at the Centre for Jazz and Popular Music in October 2000. She joined the university's part-time teaching staff in early 2001 as Jazz and Popular Voice Teacher. She directed the aforementioned vocal group NU Voices, and was a member of the National Youth Jazz Band under the leadership of Daryll Andrews. The band performed at the 2000 Joy of Jazz Festival.

April 2001 saw Natalie go to Artisten University in Gothenburg, Sweden, where she spent a month with students and teachers, learning from and contributing to the local music scene. While in Sweden, she performed at the South African Embassy in Stockholm and at Gothenburg's Nefertiti jazz club. Thereafter, she accompanied well-known pianist Melvin Peters and four other musicians to Scotland, performing at various venues including at a reception for South African President, Thabo Mbeki.
In 2001, Natalie joined Yvonne Chaka Chaka and PJ Powers on stage for the opening song of the high profile World Conference Against Racism. She completed her Masters Degree in Jazz Performance and Composition, through the University of Natal – Durban in 2003.

She continued to grow as a professional from 2004, singing with various bands and musicians.

Onyx Phillips (Charisma Band) Cape Town
Onyx is one of South Africa’s top piano entertainers and plays all styles of music. He is an experienced and professional musician & also a vocalist. He has played with some of South Africa’s top Jazz and Nightclub Bands, Latin and even Pop groups. Onyx studied music at the Royal School of Music in SA and has his Trinity School of Music Degree (Grade 5).

Played in various groups in Johannesburg for 4 yrs and came back to Cape Town where he started a solo career as keyboard/ vocalist musician.

Natali has performed resident gigs at popular music venues in Cape Town, corporate functions, private parties, weddings, at prestigious hotels all over South Africa and is currently the resident singer at Dizzys Club in Cape Town.

She studied Live Performance at AFDA (Africa Film Drama Art) majoring in Musical performance and sub-majored in subjects like acting for film, acting for stage and physical movement. Natali also performs as a solo performer and also as a featured vocaliste with various bands.

This Band is extremely versatile and plays Jazz standards as well as African Kwela, Marabe, Bossanovas, Blues, Disco, Pop, Reggae and Ballads. Its repertoire has a pleasant mix of instrumental songs combined with vocals performed by lovely Thandi Mtshali and is suitable for all ages and tastes. Tahirih Johannesburg
While in Turkey (2003), she featured as the lead singer in musical and cabaret shows, such as “Aloha”, “Hot Hot Hot,” “Musicals”,Celebrations”. She also worked in various Hotels in Turkey after which she was invited back to Norway to perform as soloist with the Bergen Choir on their tour of Norway and Sweden. She returned to South Africa at the end of 2003.
In 2004, she was a principal singer in the show “DIVA!” at the Liberty Theatre on the Square in Sandton for which she was nominated for a Naledi award. She featured in the pantomime “Cinderella” at the Civic Theatre (directed by Janice Honeyman). Coenie de Villiers cast her as one of his principal singers in his 2005 KKNK show, “Coenie De Villiers en die Oggendsterre”, which ran in Oudtshoorn, George. In 2006 she did a one woman show for Max Stibbe Waldorf School. At present, she is acting and in the popular South African series “Backstage” on E-TV.
She is a trained dancer and this comes out on her stage performance. Her style of singing ranges from sophisticated Jazz to Commercial Pop music.
